The state of Guanajuato shines at the Heart of Mexico. One of the first regions to be colonised by the Spanish, its buildings and monuments are authentic colonial jewels, with over 30 well preserved churches in the capital alone. The city is a UNESCO world heritage site, and city planners must abide by strict rules in order to maintain its colonial character.
Walking around Guanajuato is a treat for the senses. Its colorful, neoclassical buildings open up spaces for attractive plazas and baroque churches. An old subterranean river, which is now a street, crosses the city below domes and arches.

Many historical buildings have been preserved as museums, public gardens and hotels. Its open air bars and restaurants are ideal places to sit and relax.

In October, Guanajuato hosts the annual International Cervantes Culture Festival, featuring performers and artists from Mexico and around the world.
